Insecure Writer's Support Group: I Have A Secret

It's the first Wednesday of the month!  You know what that means...It's time for an Insecure Writer's Support Group (IWSG) post.

And what is this, you ask?  For those of you unfamiliar with this concept, it was the brilliant brainchild of our ninja captain, Mr. Alex Cavanaugh.  Alex is a truly awesome guy, and started the IWSG so that writers from all walks and stages on this crazy, amazing journey could come together and share stories, advice, fears, support.... you name it... we've got it!

SO.  I've been keeping a secret.

Yuuuppp.... and a fairly big one, at that.

It's something that I haven't shared with anyone... none of my friends, nor my family (except my sister).

I keep it deep inside, afraid to show the world.

...Yet it won't be even the tiniest bit of a surprise to any of you...

I write.

I want to be a writer.

I AM a writer.

No one knows this.  No one at work.  Not even my very best friends.  Sometimes it seems like I'm living two lives, chasing two careers... each integral to who I am.

The one where I wake up every morning, hustle out of bed, go through the motions to drag myself out of the house and onto the train... eventually finding myself chained to my desk, scheduling deployments and pumping out reports...

The other where I can barely wait to slip upstairs, open up my laptop, double click that word doc... anticipating the excitement when that cursor flashes provocatively at me, while my fingers itch to fly across the keyboard...

Okay, so it's not exactly rocket science that writing is where I'm happiest ;)

I'm not sure why I've been keeping it a secret.

Perhaps it's because writing is such a personal journey.  When you think about it... you are literally pouring your soul out onto a tiny scrap of paper, transcribing your deepest, innermost thoughts from the darkest recesses of your mind... bringing them into the sunlight, rust, cobwebs and all..

It's real... it's honest... it's raw...

I'm not quite sure I'm ready for the world to see.

Maybe I want to have something to show for it first...

What about you guys?  Have any of you kept your writing a secret?  Told the world, your closest friends?  And why have you or haven't you?

I did keep it secret until I was published. One friend at work knew and my husband and children. No one else. Now it's my full time job.

You know, it wasn't until I had two novels published and was in 5 anthologies that I started introducing myself as an author. I did the same thing with being a home school mom. 6 years in before I could definitively state that we were home schoolers. I think it takes time to validate ourselves and our choices. Time to accept the idea. Time to believe it.

Well, now we know!
A lot of the people I work with still don't know.
And I lead three lives when you throw in the fact I play in a band.

I keep writing to myself too. A couple of people know and that's it. When I publish I may tell them or not. :)

I told the world a few years ago, but before that, I keep it in the closet for a good decade or so. Now I just need to handle the "when's the next one coming out" question, since I'm so freaking slow... *hangs head*

Hope your writing keeps you in the happy times!

Just as long as YOU know you're a writer, who gives two biscuits and a tree stump, what everyone else knows, or thinks.

Stopped in to see what you were up to. Hope you're writing your butt off and having a fun go of it.

I don't tell people I write. My husband does and I cringe when people ask me how it's going. Because usually it's going slower than a snail in a straightjacket. The general public thinks of people like Stephen King or J.K. Rowling when they think of novelists. That ain't me and probably never will be. So no. It's not exactly a secret, but it's not something I'm wild to talk about.

When I first started writing I kept it a secret, but not anymore. Its my passion, but also more of a hobby, how I like to spend my time away from everyone. Of course some day I hope to be writing full time, as my day job; but for now, I'm content to just dream up stuff and write it down. For me.

In the very beginning I kept it a secret, but it didn't stay that way for long. It's hard to explain why it's taking me so long to be published. But being a writer is a huge part of my identity. I wouldn't hide being a wife, mother, or teacher. There's no shame in it.

Wear your writer title proudly! :)
