Dreamers... In a Dangerous Time

Don't the hours grow shorter as the days go by
You never get to stop and open your eyes
One day you're waiting for the sky to fall
The next you're dazzled by the beauty of it all...

Sometimes you're made to feel as if your love's a crime
But nothing worth having comes without some kind of fight
Got to kick at the darkness 'til it bleeds daylight...

Who remembers this song?   Barenaked Ladies.

It's been stuck in my head for the last thirty minutes...randomly... as I racked my brain for which of the million and one things I wanted to write about today.  I have no idea where it came from.

But the lyrics keep repeating.

I used to do a "Words for Wednesday" post every week.  Usually it was inspired by a specific quote or phrase or song I'd heard at some point.  These particular words seemed fitting for a mini revival of that exercise.

The song is called "Lovers in a Dangerous Time".

I'm a Dreamer.  I have always been a dreamer.  I suspect I will always be a dreamer.  People often tell me I just don't see things the way the real world presents them.   The way they're meant to be seen.

I think they're right.  But I also like to think perception is open to interpretation.

I wouldn't want to be anything else.  Maybe a part of me will always retain my inner child.  It makes me sad how as we grow older, we start to lose our wonder, that spark, the joy in the belief that anything is possible...anything...

It hasn't been easy.  The last few years have been... difficult... interesting... to say the least.  But I wouldn't change a second of it.

Nothing worth having usually comes without some kind of a fight.

It's true.

Don't you value and appreciate the things you had to work for much more than what's been handed to you?  Those glittering, shattered shards you had to fight for with all your heart and soul?  They didn't come easy, they kept you up at night...they pushed you forwards... they made you try harder... they made you wish upon that star...

We do indeed live in a dangerous time... where moments disappear in the blink of an eye.  Where yesterday's highs crash as quickly as today's lows vault up.

Got to kick at the darkness 'til it bleeds daylight...

Life keeps moving.  It never stops.  The sun always rises though, doesn't it?

Keep fighting for your dream.  Keep kicking at the darkness.  Eventually you will find that crack... the silver lining that evaded your grasp, but was always there.

And it will grow.  It will flourish and it will thrive.

Even on those days when it seems like everything is falling apart.  You will fall back together again.  I promise.

Okay... question time... naturally ;)

Are you a dreamer or grounded in reality?  A little bit of both?  What is something you're currently fighting for?  And who was (is) a fan of this song?

I think I'm a bit of both, more so on the dreamer part today. Yup, we have to fight for our dreams!

A dreamer sees the world as it could be - that's a blessing!

Sadly, I'm not much of a dreamer, unless you're talking about the chase dreams where I'm hopping into a superhero's car and rocketing off to a dance party...

Er...

Despite being a practical, non-dreamer type, I am an indulgent optimist. I would never tell you there is one way things are meant to be seen. In fact, I am fascinated by how different people work. I think it's great that you wouldn't change your difficult times. It shows strength of character.

I'm not sure if I've heard that song before. But I did start mentally singing "Pinch Me".

Holly - I love how it sometimes alternates. I couldn't agree more!

Alex - You're very right! Where would we be without the people who chose to see the world as more?

Loni - You sound like a dreamer to me! ;) I can be extremely practical too. I like to call myself a realistic optimist. Thank you so much for the kind words. Haha, and now I've got that song stuck in my head!

Dreams: they are what keep us going as writers, as souls in the dark. I have a banner for my author's table which reads the universal theme to all my novels: in a world full of darkness, we must become the light we need.

Thanks for visiting my blog. I've missed you! :-)

Roland - I love, love, love that! And I've missed you too, I was so happy to see you were still blogging :)

Ha ha, do you need to ask *grin* A Dreamer of course... Reality is too real, too in-your-face, and mostly boring. As in, too many rules, processes and procedures, you know what I mean. And it steals the fun out of the day (I guess that makes me a rebel too, hee heee hee). I'm not naive nor ignorant, and hubby is grounded in reality and logic, thusly I think I'll happily stay the colouring-in pencil in our home until I am no more.
Hallo, nice to meet you, I think I will be back too, I like what I see.

I'm a dreamer too. I think life would be so sad without having dreams. Thank you so much for the follow:)

I used to be a dreamer. Now at age 75 with a disabled daughter, I'd have to say I'm grounded in reality. But still, some of those dreams cling....

Very thoughtful post. Thanks for commenting on my Walking Wounded story so I could come over here and say hi.

I like that even if you've had difficult years, you wouldn't change them. We learn from everything, good and bad, and I think that's important especially if you're a writer.

I think I'm more of a realist, although who doesn't like to dream? When I was a kid, I lived in a fantasy world to escape reality...I think that is part of what helps me be a better writer today. Lots of practice at making up stories in my head!

I'm a big dreamer. Reality isn't always fun and it can usually be better.

All of the above! We dream of a better day and the fears that haunt us. They're fuel for writing. Always.

I'm fighting for a better submission to the two agents who want to see what I've got. Cross your fingers.

BTW, your song is far better than the one stuck in my head lately. ;-)

LOVE BNL! :)

I'm definitely a dreamer, too. I handle reality pretty well most of the time, but the dreams are what make it all work :)

I'm a huge fan of the Barenaked Ladies! I'm a little of both. I have my dream of being able to support my family by writing, and maybe one day being as big as Stephen King. But I'm grounded in reality in what I need to do to take care of my family now while working on my dream. :)

We really do have a greater appreciation for the things we work hard for.

I'm a bit of both - more of a dreamer, though, which means when reality hits, it hits very hard indeed!

Thanks for visiting my blog and following :-)

I'm both, leaning towards being a dreamer. I find that my creativity has become stronger with age and I don't feel my age either.

I'm definitely a bit of both. I love dreaming, but if I didn't actually do anything about it, dreaming would be where it stayed.
